New security system anticipates future FDIC requirements
Private Bank and Trust Company´s new network security system goes beyond current Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) requirements by providing data encryption within the bank´s protected network.
With increased concerns about security after September 11, 2001, Private Bank and Trust Company, which has branch offices in Wilmette, Winnetka, Lake Forest, Oak Brook, Geneva, and St. Charles in addition to its main location in downtown Chicago, hired onShore, Inc.—a computer systems integrator—to upgrade its disaster recovery and security systems. onShore designed a network security system with three components:
- a firewall that allows certain types of traffic in or out of the network;
- an intrusion detection system (IDS) with ongoing monitoring of unusual traffic patterns on both the "wild" and internal sides of the network;
- and data encryption within the protected network, which, while not yet required, anticipates future FDIC requirements.
onShore also designed and installed a fully-meshed and secure wide area network (WAN) that, by offering complete redundancy in the critical data and high speed T-1 lines over which the data is carried, provides state-of-the-art disaster recovery for the bank´s six branches. So, in the event that something happens in Chicago or any of the other bank´s six other locations, the others can continue to operate unimpeded.
